Mikah, a 12-week-old German Shepherd puppy, sat nervously in the reception area of our Fort Worth clinic. His pet parent, Lisa Garcia, had just adopted him and brought him to Spay Neuter Network for low-cost vaccinations. Mikah was one of several dogs and cats getting vaccinated for the first time that day, thanks to a low-cost program funded by a grant that allowed us to offer distemper and parvo vaccines for only $10 – half the usual price. Many low-income families get their pets’ rabies vaccine because it’s the law, but opt out of other necessary vaccines because of cost. At just $10 per vaccine, Lisa was thrilled she could afford to get Mikah fully vaccinated that day. And for what it’s worth, Mikah left the clinic happier, and perhaps a bit eager, to head home.
